Workshops

We run workshops for any and all kinds of groups. Expect to be thinking, writing, moving, and asking many questions! Workshops will be tailored to your goals, and no prior experience in writing, performing or activism is required.

To request a workshop or ask a question, get in touch with us at AboutThatElephant@gmail.com.

Where do we come from?

Where have you come from? The people who raised you, the values you were taught, TV, the place you grew up, a song you loved, capitalism, a childhood habit, a dream for your future, the internet, your ancestry-- the list goes on. In this workshop, we’ll visit the different places that have shaped us and follow the threads that connect them, from geography to racism to money to faith.

Wait, what am I saying?

Queer. Dope. POC. Fat. Holla. In this workshop, we’ll pause to think about the words we use, the words other people use, and how the politics of language shift from one mouth to the next. How do the words you use empower you? Hinder you? Change you? Where did those words come from, and where are they traveling now? In particular, we’ll focus on how someone’s identity and experience alters the effect of their words.

Broken Telephone

We’ve all been tangled in miscommunication: I send an email intending to say one thing, you read it and get a completely different message from my words. How do these mix-ups happen on the mic?  This workshop investigates how to craft poems that communicate effectively with an audience. As we focus on poetry that seeks to challenge listeners to make change, we will explore writing and performance techniques that change the impact of a poem and ask how different rooms of people might hear the same poem in different ways.
